LocTite 242 vs. 245

LocTite 242 vs. 245
I recently needed LocTite Blue but went to a local hardware store instead of Home Depot. Instead of having LocTite 242 they had a generic version of the 245 which is somewhat surprising because LocTite 245 is not available in retail packaging. Getting back to the story the generic 245 was about half the price of a generic 242 (from Auto Zone). Is the 245 suitable as a replacement for 242 as far as bicycles are concerned? I got the datasheets for the 242 and 245 but am having a hard time decyphering them.

The 242 is blue and the 245 is red. The blue (242 ) you can break lose with hand tools ,the red one will need more muscle to break lose or even heat but other than that yes it will work for you.

The blue 242 you can get loose on a bike I would not suggest the red 245 you will snap the small bolts right off if you try to remove them with out heat.

No. 271 is red 245 is Blue but isn't normally available at retail. Here is the data sheet for 245. Here is the actual item my local hardware store was selling.

A couple of things:
I have a tube of "Blue Type 245" except it isn't Loc-Tite, it's Prime Loc, a very similar thread locker made by a different company, ITW Performance Polymers and this is what you may also have seen.
There is no such thing as "Red Loctite" as a single product. There are several grades of red colored Loctite in various strength for use on various size bolts and conditions. They very from strong to very strong and most require heat to release. There are also several grades of "Green" Loctite that are wicking lockers and applied after the bolt is threaded in.

That is exactly what I saw. Have you noticed any differance between it and LocTite Blue 242?

I use it mostly to mount scope sight bases on firearms and some infrequent bike applications. It behaves just like the "real" Loctite 242.
