successful effort to get lower gears

Thanks to all those who advised me on how to get some lower gears for my new Novara Randonee touring bike. I changed the inner chain ring to 24t from 30t and the exchange worked beautifully. Shifting is smooth and the jump down to 24t from the middle ring of 39t is not a problem. I bought the chain ring for $23 plus shipping and the crank wrench for $15.99. a few bucks for shipping, thirty minutes in the garage, and the job is done. Thanks again for all the advice on what to do and how to do it.

If you ever decide you need lower yet, I just got a Mountain Tamer Quad with 18,20,26, and 28t rings. It takes the place of the small ring on a tripple, and holds two rings. You just have to make sure you have a long enough spindle for the fourth ring to clear, and enough pull in your FD and shifter to go from small to big over four vs. three rings. I have a Zinn 190mm crank I will put it on with the 20,26,39, and 53 rings. With bar end shifters, I think I will be OK. The theory is good, but we'll see how it works in practice.

I'm glad to hear that it went so well. Hopefully you've also mounted some sort of chain-drop prevention device on your seat tube. Even if the shift from 39 down to 24 normally works, it's good to have insurance against overshifting and dropping the chain at the worst possible moment. The N-Gear jump stop is my favorite model of these, but there are several others.

+1 A "chain watcher" is an excellent form of cheap insurance. I also use and recommend the N-Gear Jump Stop but the Third Eye Chain Watcher also works.
