Just got a new pre-made set of wheels
in the mail. The Ritchey Pro Z wheels. Is there anything I should do to check to see that there is no damage or that they should be adjusted (I'm thinking spoke tension)? If I "strum" each spoke, should the tone or tenor be the same for all spokes on the same wheel? Thanks.

I ordered the same from Nashbar. When I received them, one was missing a skewer nut. I immediately called Nashbar and they mailed one skewer assembly, "next day air" USPS. I also had the wheels trued and tension checked by my LBS. Since then, I have put about 600 miles and still holding up quite well.

Yep, the best thing you can do is make sure that the wheels are tensioned properly. Improper spoke tension is the most common problem for spoke failure. Take them to a shop and get there opinion.
On a second note, make sure the hubs are adjusted properly.... |
I used to build my own standard wheels but these days it's so much cheaper to just buy an entirely machine built non-custom conventional wheelset and tweek them yourself if necessary. I just ordered a mountain wheelset, XT hubs, mavic XC 717 rims, DT double butted spokes, all for $209, including free shipping. I figured if I where to buy the hubs, rims, and spokes separately, they will cost me at least $250 plus my assembly time.

I'll bring mine to the LBS as well, I guess. |
