Shimano ST 9speed shifters / STI 10 speed shifters difference?

I am replacing a shift cable on my Trek FX for the first time which has 9 speed ST shifters. I removed the cable and compared it to a cable for my road bike which has 10 speed STI shifters.

The Trek FX cable seems to be thicker and the wire end seems to be larger. I thought that I heard that all Shimano shifter cables were the same. Looks like this is not true?

What about the cable housing?

The ends of MTB shifter cables are larger than the ends of road cables, the actual cables and housing are the same thickness. Most replacement cables have 2 different ends.

Thanks!

What about the housing? I have some thicker stuff laying around seems to be the same thickness housing as my hybrid but not sure (I can't get the housing ends of the old housing to compare).
