Shell width should be 70mm for Italian, 68 or 73 for english. If you have an english thread cartridge or cup, in should drop right into an Italinan thread shell due to the larger diameter of the threading. 73mm shells are english, and most typically found on MTB,but I've heard of them on a few older road and touring frames.

Is there a way of telling for sure I have italian BB just by looking at it on the bike?

The reason I want to know is because I am ordering my BB today (along with a complete 9 speed ultegra drivetrain from performance using that 20% off coupon you told me about)

Measure the shell width, or pull the cranks and look to see if it says 36x24tpi on one of the cups. If that fails, try and remove the drive side ,which if italian is right hand thread....I could also guess that anything italian other that recent Bianchis would be italian thread, but I won't.
