chain replacement?

I was wondering if some one could give me a ball park figure on how many miles a person could put on a hybrid before replacing the chain or at the least check it for wear? I ride mainly ride roads. When I get close to the your recommendation I'll buy a tool to check it.
Thanks,
Mike

Miles vary depending on how heavy you are, riding style and maintenance. To check your chain measure it from rivet center to rivet center over a 12" spread. If when you measure it and it is 12 1/16 then you need to think about replacing it. If it measures 12 1/8" then you need to change it and maybe the cassette and chainring.

I ride a road bike mainly. I change my chain about every 1800 miles. The cassette gets changed every 3rd time I change the chain. I have found that if I go over about 2100 mile on a chain I have to change the cassette also due to the chain and cassette wearing together. WHat happens is I get chain skip in the gears i use most when I put pressure on the pedals.

I only have about 275 miles on this bike. So I have a while to go. It amazes me that a chain that small can last that many miles.

Chain wear is also a matter of maintaince. Remove and clean the chain. I do mine every 650 to 750 miles. The original lube on the chain is good for about 1000 miles. It's the best lube your chain will see.
I routinely get over 10,000 miles on a chain.
