Dust cap for a Shimano XTR rear hub M-950

I searched first, but couldn't find any reference where it's come up before. Do any of you know anyone who has some new old stock, in particular a Shimano XTR rear hub dust cap or dust cover for an M-950? I understand that Shimano doesn't have them available for order anymore. But I have to assume there are plenty of bike shops with several of them sitting in bins in the back room someplace.

This is a dust cap that's kinda funnel-shaped, and goes on the non-drive side of the rear hub.

I wish i could offer more specific help, but it may be more helpful to see if any other generations or levels of shimano hubs have dust covers that're compatible. I rebuilt an LX hub with a leter-gen deore hubs guts, once. All the parts fit and worked, although i've been told that the plain deore has "worse" bearings. Either way, they've lasted a good long time.

I know that xtr has some proprietary, exclusive features. Of course, many of these features trickle down to other groups. I wish that shimano would be more transparent with cross-compatibility info, but i reckon they'd rather sell more hubs than dust covers?

hth,

Thanks, Rob. Yeah, it seems from what I'm being told that Shimano stops offering repair parts after a few years. Which is making me rethink the wisdom of holding out for Shimano XTR. Maybe SRAM is not such a bad way to go after all. But right now, I have what I have, and I hate to toss out a pretty young hub, spokes and rim just because Shimano sees fit not to support their older XTR rear hubs.

Do you have the old cone/dustcap assembly? Most of Shimano's dustcaps can be reused by pressing it off of the cone and onto a new one if you are careful not to damage it. I've been able to reuse the dustcaps on several Shimano hubs this way.

That would be a logical thing to do. But one of the bike shops I've been to for tune ups, etc. managed to break the plastic dust cap. It's mostly shattered. If I knew which shop did it, I would put pressure on them to replace it. But you know in advance how it will be: Each would point fingers at the others and deny blame. And so it follows, that I just need to man up and get myself another dust cap. Shouldn't be a major item - once I find one. Couple of bucks or so, most likely.
