    Crank tapered pins needed for Tiny Peugeot

    I picked up this tiny black Peugeot this morning - it was being discarded after years of storage because the two crank arms were no longer 180 degrees apart. It has a crank shaft with the round ends and flats milled on them to accept pins with a tapered flat. One of the pins broke but appears to have done little damage to the crank or the pedal. I measured the diameter of the tapered pin and it seems to be about .350" .

    Where can I get a set of tapered pins so I can re-assemble the crank arms on this bike ??

    Simplex derailleurs & Mafac Racer bits, "Made in France" on the seat tube, and has a leather Peugeot Sport seat.

    No model name on it so I suppose it might be a U08 ?

    +1 I believe the "french" size is 9.0mm - I hear that filing them down a bit is to be expected.

    Thanks, guys. You are right. 9 mm it is.

    I measured the damaged pin and it mic'd out at .355", which is one thousandth of an inch over 9.0mm so I did a quick look at Sheldon Brown.

    The problem is that when I used the link quoted above to try to order some I find that they are out of stock.

    Does anyone know where else I can get some ??

    Another problem is that I'm in Canada and UPS wants $20.00 to deliver a $1.95 part to Canada from the USA via UPS GROUND, and then they charge another $18 for looking at the paperwork to determine that seven cents in in duty is payable. I'd like to get a set of these pins for less than $40.00...

    They are correctly called cotters. Most of the cotters you'll find being sold by retailers are crap. Pay a bit more and get high quality cotters here:

    He'll also sell you the correct tool to remove and install them, or you can take it to a bike shop and have them do it. It can be done with a hammer, but a press is the right way to do it.

    The Peugeot appears to have a replacement fork and front wheel, so it was probably crashed into something. Check the frame at the headlug for signs of damage.

    Thanks for the link. I just sent off an email to Mark to get a quote for a couple of cotters & postage.

    The front forks are chromed & may not be stock but I think the rims & wheels (DEA, Made in France) are original.

    Since the bike was free I can't complain.

    The tyres are Hutchinsons & older than the hills.

    If you can get someone to send via USPS it should be much cheaper.

    I tried the local bike shop - they only had ONE 9mm crank cotter identical to the one I needed. $1.95 so I grabbed it. Delighted !! A few swipes with a file & it pressed in nicely to a depth that gave me 100% thread exposure for the nut & washer. Mission accomplished.

    Actually, they had other cotters that were the same diameter as well BUT they were slightly longer and the tapered cut on them was VERY shallow.

    The pin for the Peugeot has a taper so deep that it runs right off the end of the pin but the other pins there had a taper cut that barely extended 3/4 of the way to the end.

    I bought a set of those, too.
