Good Deal?

Hey everyone, I'm in the market for a used road bike and thought I'd ask a few questions. I was watching an ebay auction, thinking that this was the sort of bike I could afford:
https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...e=STRK:MEWA:IT

I'm looking to know if it's worth spending the money on something similar to that. The bike in question interested me because it had been upgraded to 700c wheels, and appeared to be in pretty good shape for its age. The color didn't bother me much, as I have a seat to replace the yellow one, and of course the handlebar tape would be replaced.

The reason I'm asking this question here is because I'd like to know what kind of maintenance I would have to do on a bike like that. I noticed that the cassette looked pretty old, and the chain seemed pretty cruddy. I'm relatively new to working on bicycles, but have been learning a lot working on my current 10 speed bike. I know it's always hard to buy something like this on ebay sight unseen, but having looked around locally I have yet to find anything similar... I really can't afford a new road bike, and it seems that an 80s bike with upgraded wheels/components would be perfect for me. I've done some reading about bike fit, and have experimented a bit on my current bike, which is too big for me. I hope to learn a lot more with time.

It seems the general consensus on the Road forum is to buy new/recent bikes, but I simply can't afford that luxury right now. With time I will probably upgrade some components, and am considering having a professional bike fitting done.

So, with all that, does anyone have some advice for me? Thanks.

You would probably have to make some derailleur adjustments, maybe clean the chain/cassette(sp?) and oil it up. The chain and cassette don't look like in bad condition, just dirty.

Might have to replace some cables, the housings look fine.

Aside from that I can't give you much advice. I have never heard of that brand before and don't know anything about the derailleurs.

Sorry, hope what I could contribute helped a little!

a cheap bike is, as a rule, cheap to fix. no worries. a new 6-spd cassette and chain is real cheap too.
