Cone Conundrum Continues, advice needed!!!

A while ago I posted about my rear hub cone nuts self destructing. One of the hubs cone nuts stripped along with the axle.

Well since then I have not been able to fix it properly. I went to LBS with the old axle and they gave me an axle and nuts for about 20$. It is not exactly the same as the old hub (deore m525) but I thought it would work. Wrong. Even with all of the old hardware on the new axle save for one stripped cone on it is impossible to get the tension correct, there is play (I assume because the new cone is a slightly different angle).

What are my options, should I order a new hub and just take out the guts? Can I order just the nut from somewhere or is this even a good idea? Thanks, this is really ticking me off and keeping me off my bike! :notamused::twitchy:

European Shimano small parts dealers - about a dozen online exist - be willing to wait 13 days shipping wise. Try to order in the US and you may find yourself looking at 6 weeks - that's assuming the dealer gets the part number correct.

My problem is the M10 axle used on the front - I end up making my own axles using a makeshift lathe.

=8-)

Usually when cones are impossible to adjust it isn't the cone or axle. As long as the cone has similar radius and curvature it should work passably.

The most common cause of problems is an extra ball. Take it apart and make sure you have the right amount of the right size balls, then try again.
