Can't Clip Into This Pedal

My daughter can't clip into this pedal from her bike's left side:

It seems that perhaps the rear part has been bent forward -- it doesn't hit the beveled area on the cleat.

The screw that the arrow is pointing to does not screw in (it just turns, as if the threads are stripped).

Is it toast, or is there a way to fix it?

Thanks,

If the screw can't be screwed back in, then the rear part of the mechanism probably will not line up correctly to engage the cleat.
Can you pry forward - or maybe backwards - the end farthest from the screw head to line up the screw head with it's threads, so that it can be screwed in?
That's a pretty beat up looking pedal.

Sometimes with repeated assaults the latching hook does get bend down a bit making engagement difficult. Sometimes you can file or grind more bevel to ease engagement, but do not cut the hook back or touch the underside lest you reduce the reliability of the hold. Given that the pedals seem to have some mileage on them, and there are other issues like the stripped adjustment screw, I suggest you consider a rebuild or replacement.

I fixed it, thanks for the help. Yes, the bolt didn't line up with the hole because some of the hardware somewhere was hitting something else. The threads weren't stripped after all.

I couldn't pry it into place, but I beveled it just a little bit, as you suggested FB, and once it got into the hole, screwing it in brought things into alignment.
