A friend asked me this morning if I'd ever heard of this, which I haven't, so I'm asking you experts.

He swapped the bars and shifters from one frame to another, but when he went to hook it all up, he says that the right shifter won't ratchet. It has one of those clear 'gear indicators' and he says when he pushes the lever over, the indicator shows that it's pulling the cable, but it doesn't click, or ratchet, at all. As he releases the lever the indicator just goes back to the far left.

I personally don't own any 7800's so I couldn't tell him what to look for inside, but I'd appreciate any advice you guys can give.

As someone who has fixed these shifters before I warn you against just ripping them apart without being ready for the consequences. I have not had the chance to rip apart one of these newer 7800s (I have done 9 speed stuff) but I am going to assume they still use the same mechanism as the old 9 speed. If that is the case soak the shifter in degreaser overnight and blow out the top of it with compressed air. This might free up the ratcheter, but it may not work.

Others has suggested here to get a spray can of WD40 and flush out the shifter. This will probably do what soaking it in degreaser and blowing it out with compressed air does.

No a WD40 flush is not always effective. The grease used in the shifters is very thick. It needs a long time to dissolve. Wd40 does not last long enough. You really need to use mineral spirits.
