1" steerer tube spacers
I am going to install a new fork on my Litespeed Classic, which has a 1" threadless fork. My current steerer tube is carbon, but the new one will be steel. Any suggestions for the maximum height for spacers between the headset and the stem? I called the company's tech line, and the person said 2" / 5 cm, but it sounded like he was taking a guess. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Steel it doesn't really matter. You could have anywhere from 45-55mm of spacers which is typical max range.
If you need more than that your bike is too small. Or your fit is horrendously incorrect.

Hey us old guys cannot ride like we are touching our toes all the time..
hunkered over like a downhill skier .
Ive got a frame I can straddle , and trekking bars higher than the saddle..
You do what must be done..
Get someplace to cut a single tall spacer ,
or they come in 40mm and thinner.

What have you got for tradeing stock?
I still have a 40mm section of Santana carbon steerer tube that is the perfect size for 1" stack spacers. That'd look classy on a Lightspeed and one custom sized spacer is much cooler looking than a bunch of little ones. I'd be willing to trade for an equal amount of 1 1/8" black stack spacers.

Thanks to all for the feedback. I wasn't necessarily interested in going above the 5 cm stack height. I had a professional fitting done on another bike over the winter, and I was wondering about adapting that position to the Litespeed as well. In the end, I was able to get pretty close with just 3.5 cm of spacers. I left about 1 cm above the stem, just to give me some room to adjust, if needed. If it is not needed, I will cut it down later.

I had 5 cm of spacers above the threadless headset on a 55cm '96 Litespeed Catalyst with a Kestrel EMS Pro fork that had a 1" Cr-Mo steerer and it was no problem. As noted, steel steerers are far more tolerant of high spacer stacks than carbon would be.
Also, the need for that many spacers is why my more recent bikes have 57 cm frames and 3cm of spacers.
