Somebody gave me a brand new tiagra 9 speed frt derailleur (guess they aren't worth much)....

do you think there would be a compatability problems with Octalink cranks?

The reason I'm asking is because I know the tiagra crank uses a different BB which is square taper....spindle length I'm sure is different (even though they are both doubles).

They say all 9 speed stuff is interchangeable.....sometimes I think it may not be a perfect match though.

ultegra front derailleurs are on sale for $27.00 at supergo.....so it's not like I'm saving all that much money by using this tiagra.

P.S. Is this tiagra part any good?

The Tiagra part was FREE determine it's value from that. Will it work? Yes. Will it be as good as Ultegra? No. The Tiagra is four levels down from Ultegra (Dura Ace, Ultegra, 105, Sora, Tiagra....) The part will work (presuming it will fit your frame) you have to make the call as to wheter or not you want it.

Get your facts straight. Tiagra is ABOVE Sora and BELOW 105.

The type of BB-crank interface doesn't matter as long as the FD is for a double. BB spindle length for a double is 109.5mm, square-tapered OR Octalink

Yes, 9-speed parts are interchangable. I've had no problems with mixing them up.

Works for me. Depends on how good the adjustment is. Even an Ultegra will feel like crap if not done correctly.

Spindle length doesn't neessarily matter either.A campy 102 gives the same chainline,as do many other crank/bb combiantions.
