How to loosen stem bearing.

How do I loosen a old Shimano 600 stem bearing. The problem is that the locknut is not hexagonal, it is shaped like a star with 8-9 points. I dont want to scratch it up to much using a polygrip. How do I do???

I'm assuming you're talking about the large lockring at the top of the headset? If so, I believe that takes a 32mm wrench or a large monkey wrench would work as well.

You need the headset wrench set that fits that. The pattern puts equal pressure all around the part so it stays round.

Call up Shimano and check if they've got any lying around?

You can if you pad the jaws. The stuff from the OP about the special tool and 'keeping it round' is baloney.Considering how cheap HS are I'd just chuck it and use one that takes a regular wrench.

Thats a cool headset, I have the wrenches that fit, but a pair of regular 32mm headset wrenchs will work fine. The special wrenchs just made it a little easier to adjust. Less chance of wrench slipping if it engages the recessed parts.

Would you like to mention me in your last will???
Until you crash, I guess I just have to buy a pair of regular 32 mm wrenches.

Does anyone know how to get it of after I have loosened it? The parts in the bike I mean. I am moving it to another frame.
