I recently got a 1970s Schwinn Continental for free. The only problem I've had with it was that the one piece crank lock nut will not thread on the crank. I bought the 28 tpi wald bottom bracket bearings set off of ebay which in the description said that it is compatible with older schwinns. I converted this bike into a fixed gear so whenver I skid stop the crank would loosen up as a result of not having a locknut threaded on. Are there are solutions to my problem?

You need three parts on the left (non-drive) side, an adjustable threaded bearing cone, a keyed washer and a threaded locknut. If you don't have the washer, it doesn't stay tight.

If the right (drive) side's fixed cone isn't tightened with enough force against the sprocket, it can come loose.

The problem is that the locknut that I got will not thread onto the crank at all so how can I put on the locknut? I know that it threads the opposite direction as the cone. I also have all the parts which include the cone, keyed washer, and threaded locknut. I think the reason why the locknut will not thread on is that the schwinn one piece crank has a bump on the front of the threads that block the locknut from threading on. The crank might need a schwinn designed locknut or something. I'll post pictures later.

Threads on the locknut are the same as the adjustable cone. Both tighten counter-clockwise. Not aware of any bump, a locknut is a locknut, 28tpi is the right one for a Schwinn crank.

I just realized that none of the wald 28 tpi parts will thread after testing them. I am using the original schwinn cones, cups, and ball bearings. So the only parts I would need are the washer and locknut. The wald cone on the non drive side will only thread on 2 rotations then get extremely tight. The lock nut would do the same thing. The original schwinn cone I am using threads on correctly but the wald cone does not even though its supposed to be 28 tpi aswell. I assume that the locknut and cones are either 24 tpi or aren't meant for schwinns.

When I bought it the description said that it was 28 tpi and meant for schwinn and mongoose. Now it says that it is a 24 tpi...

Sounds like you figured it out. What's wrong with the original Schwinn 28tpi bb? I've found them to be bulletproof. A good clean-up and fresh grease has always been enough for the scores of Schwinn 28tpi bbs I've worked on over the years.

There isn't anything wrong with the bottom bracket its just that when I first got the bike the locknut, washer, and the bearings were missing so I purchased the one I mentioned above but that didn't work out. I going to buy the sunlite 28 tpi bottom bracket set. Well thanks for helping me I appreciate it.

Sounds like you had a learning experience: you can get burned on Ebay. I've had nearly as bad experiences.
