Front derailer cable tension?

I am running new cables on a tripple chainring with shimano indexed shifting.

It seems like the cable is too slack when in the lowest gear. But if I tighten it, then the chain rubs on the derailer in the middle gear. So as long as the derailer is shifting well on all three gears, should I worry about it seeming to slack?

You answered you own question. If it shifts properly it's, by definition, adjusted properly

MitchL, As long as the cable isn't striking the frame you're fine. In my amateur experiance when setting up a triple with indexed shifting I zero in on the middle chainring and the ability to shift to and from it from either direction. It also depends on the front shifter's ability to trim, some have been better than others.

Thanks for the replies. I figured I was all set, but I'm doing this for a coworker. So I wanted to double check before I handed him back a defective bike.
