New Wheels!

I just received a new set of wheels from Joe Young. Mavic A719 36H (black), Phil Wood hubs (chrome) and DT spokes (black). I'm on cloud 9 right now.

But... there are a few things that I need to address before getting them on the bike. I need to get some rim tape for the Mavic rims. I overlooked that little detail. Velox rim tape seems to be the standard, but what width would work best with the A719? I also need to pick up a set of tubes to match the Schwalbe Marathon Plus 700x35C tires I purchased a few weeks ago.

The new wheels will be replacing the stock wheels on a Surly Cross Check that I bought a couple of months ago. I was planning to move the cassette from the stock rear wheel to the new one, but forgot to buy the tools in time. I also thought about buying a new cassette which gives me two complete sets of wheels to work with. Either way, I need to get the tools, or take everything to the LBS which goes against my tinkering personality...

I also noticed right away (by accident) how serviceable the Phil Wood hubs are when I unscrewed one of the ends (that was loose to begin with) and pulled the rear hub apart. That made me wonder if I was overlooking any small things that need to be taken care of or checked out before simply slapping the wheels on the bike. (I assume that screwing the ends of the hub back on and using a couple of allen wrenches to tighten them is the right thing to do?). I need to do a little more research to make sure I don't screw up these beautiful wheels.

Overall, I'm very happy, and can't wait to get them on the bike. Any suggestions on what I've run into so far, or information on things I haven't considered?

Congrats on the wheels. The a719's should take the 17mm wide tape. My understanding is that the hubs are just like you described. I can't think of anything in particular you need to check on them. After a couple of years they'll just be wheels to you, and that will be a good thing.
