Very stiff, rigid chain

Hi everyone,

So I rode my bike in the snow, then left it for a few months (woops!). Now I go to ride and the chain is very rigid and will not turn when I peddle.

I cleaned it with water, removing a bunch of rust+dirt. Then I dried it. Still won't go.

Should I oil it, and then will it go?? I just have to go to the store and buy some lubricant.

Any other tips??

Thanks!

Oil it, if it is still stiff (which it probably will be), replace

How much would that cost?

Depends on the bike. The type of chain is determined by the bike. If is is a single-speed bike (or IGH) you need a single-speed chain. If it is a derailer-equipped bike, the chain type is based on the number of cogs on the rear wheel. Assuming you don't have 8 cogs or more, a chain can be had for $15 but you'll need a chain tool to break it to make it the right length.

Thanks again! Glad it's cheap.

I have access to a chain tool :)

You will need to make the new chain have the same number of links as the old one.

If it's not too badly rusted, spray/soak it with WD40 or PB Blaster. Those will free it up. Then oil it.

If it's rusted, replace it. They're cheap enough. No sense getting hurt when it snaps on you (I've had this happen to me, twice.)
