Not sure if the frame is a large one or not but most have receommended replacing both the freewheel and chain at the same time. If it still skips you do not have enough chain wrap on the small cog. A Schwinn Continental does not have adjustable dropouts and it is possible your rear wheel may be seated too far into the dropouts.

Had this same problem with 25 1/2" framed Trek 520 many years ago. Replaced the Regina freewheel and Regina Oro chain at the same time and it would still pop out of gear under sprints. Swapped out the Campy derailluer with a Shimano 600 and it still skipped. Finally adjusted the dropout adusters to have the wheel just in enough for the skewer to clamp down good solved the problem.

Move the rear wheel in and out of the dropout and note the change in chain wrap around that small cog. Do not seat the rear wheel too far into the dropout.

hmm, i will check the chain wrap situation. But the wheel already can't go very far back into the dropouts due to the derailleur hanger taking up some space.

New freewheel and New chain,
then you have the opportunity to get the chain length proper.

don't let the chain wear too much before replacing it.

Freewheel arrived today. Fixed the problem like a charm (along with the recently replaced chain, i assume that helped too). Thanks everyone for all the advice.

Looks like if I need a new freewheel I might as well just buy a new rear wheel? Where could I buy a rear 27 inch wheel?
