Deore LX M550
These hubs have thin stamped metal dustcaps......I very gently pried these off the front hub to overhaul. There is a very slight bend in the inner ring of the dust cap....I have always dealt with DA hubs that had removable dustcaps....is there a source for replacement dust caps? This 1991 Bianchi Osprey I'm turning into a commuter bike will never leave the road. Could I just tap them back in and make sure they are not rubbing against the cone?

You can use a socket the correct size to fit inside the shields and bang it flat or get one of these for the right side. https://www.loosescrews.com/index.cgi...d=781819529950

Thanks for the tips......these are the front hub. Knowing now what I know.......I'll leave the rear ones in place and find a way to completely clean those races without removing them.

I just overhauled a set of M550 hubs. To clean out all the old grease, just keep packing in some paper towel and/or tissue, possibly rotate it, and then pull it out. Repeat with clean material until no old grease comes out.

Just reshape the dustcap with a mallet over a wood dowel or use a socket as davidad recommended. These aren't a precision fit and, as long as the edges don't drag on the cone, you will be fine.
