Difference Between Ultegra and 600?
What is the difference between FH-6400 and FH-6500 hubs?
On my cyclocross bike I currently have new Ultegra 6500 front and rear derailleurs and an NOS 6500 crankset. I am using Dura-Ace 7700 brifters. My hubs are Shimano 600, HD-6500, year unknown.
What is the difference between Ultegra 6500 hubs and the 600 6400 hubs? I would like all ultegra components, but if the 600 are just as good, then is it worthwhile getting other hubs?
I do have a 6500 front hub on another wheelset (LX rear), and since the specs are the same on the 6400's and the 6500's, I can swap the hubs, but is it worth the time and effort? Them I would have to get a rear 6500 hub.

The most important aspect is that FH-6400 used 7-speed twist-tooth cassettes which were retained with a threaded small cog. It also had 126mm axle spacing. You're better off with a 130mm hub that can take 8/9/10sp Hyperglide cassettes. For CX use, I'd actually go with Tiagra 4500, which is very similar to Ultegra 6700 but costs a lot less.

I'm running a 9 speed cassette now so someone must have changed the freehub sometime in the past.

Shimano's 600 were positioned in the medium price point niche.
not cheap, but not Dura Ace.
the name Ultegra was dreamed up later, and applied to the current,
just below the premium stuff ranking..
so similar in that.. there are several pricepoint niches
that make up part of the bottom line of what a bike sells for.

Then IMO your 600 hub may as well be Ultegra. It's just what they started calling 600 (there was even "600 Ultegra" for a bit IIRC), and I doubt any changes were made to rear hubs at that time besides 130mm and Hyperglide cassette bodies beyond changing the name.

Shimano 600 became 600 Ultegra. Eventually 600 was dropped and it became Ultegra. So if you're comparing stuff with a similar age, it's all the same. Most (all?) of the tri-color parts only say 600 on them while they were labeled as 600 Ultegra in catalogs and spec sheets.

...and if you're running 9 speeds on a 130OLD rear wheel, then it's compatible with just about any mordern system out there, including 10 speeds. I have several 600 wheelsets, one with Uniglide (twisted cog tooth mentioned above), one with 126 OLD Hyperglide 7- speed, and one with 130 OLD 9/10 speed. Great stuff, although I recently had one of the rears relaced as the spokes were getting brittle and breaking under uphill sprints.
