I like "real" bikes, as opposed to vaporware. I've seen this guy's bikes on the road, and they work: http://montanatransitauthority.com/

While I believe that if no one ever asked, "Hey, why don't we try XXX?" we would all still be using bearskin knives, I also think a lot of this is just... wankitude. Solutions in search of a problem.

Such is the "design project" field. Does it work? Who knows? Does it break a few laws of physics? Who cares! Has it been done better before? Psssh. It looks pretty! Lets get it a design award!

Very rarely a "design" comes out of these award groups that bears some resemblance to something that is a good idea - or even works - but not often.

There's being innovative and there's being over the top.

One of those bikes in the weburbanist link has square wheels which rely on an inverted catenary shaped roadway ! ? ! ? ! ? ! ?

The standup "climbing" bike is so grossly huge that it HAS to be able to protect the operator from traffic since it would need to take up more than half the darn road! ! ! !

The spokess rim drive wheels ignore the simple fact that the rims would need to be much too heavy to be strong enough to withstand actual road use.

However some of the folding bike concepts are pretty slick.

A concept bike which works is interesting, exciting, cool!
A concept bike which doesn't work is just bad sculpture.

I reckon the cardboard one is pretty awesome.
