Hello,

My bike coasts randomly and too often. Sometimes while I'm pedaling, I feel the pedals get loose/no resistance and thus the pedals go quickly (I think the bike is coasting). Then the pedals become normal again and there is resistance.

This is highly annoying and disrupts my cycling rhythm.

My research tells me that it may be a problem with a freewheel? Is this true?

Also, I bought my bike about 2 weeks ago; It is a Northrock xc6 from Costco; and I'm new to bicycling X.x

Any help would be greatly appreciated

1. Since you only bought your bike 2 weeks ago I'd take it back. Essentially, you bought a product that doesn't perform it's intended purpose. Tell them to either fix it or give you one that works.

2. If it was an older or used bike I'd tell you to remove the back wheel and lay it across a trash can with the sprockets up. Spin the sprockets with your finger and notice what moves and what stays still. Spray a little WD40 into the crack between the moving and non-moving parts. Give it a little time to soak in and spin the sprockets until they move freely. Reinstall the rear wheel and you'll be good-to-go.

Take it back and demand a new rear wheel or bike. The freehub is defective.

If I buy a somewhat expensive entry level bike like around $400 from amazon or a local bike store will I encounter much less problems?

Also, how would replacing the wheel fix the freehub? Is the freehub a part of the wheel?

As post #2 take it back, as it's defective.

just because you buy a more expensive bike doesn't mean it will be issue free, buying from Amazon will mean you have to fix it yourself, from a LBS, mean they will have done a pre-purchase inspection, and should give you a free service after a set period.

For what a freehub is, look at the stickies, and read up on it, on Sheldon Browns site.

This is lol to read just weeks after I finally figured out what a freewheel, rim, hub, cluster, and wheel actually are myself.

Just weeks.

1. Everything has a failure rate. If you bought from a local bike store they'll at least have a service department that should be able to fix your bike.

2. All of the posts on Bike Forums aren't technically totally accurate. A freehub or a freewheel are both part of the wheel.
