The keys aren't those cylindrical types, so people can't really hack into it without specific tools.

tell me something about the heat treatment processes the parts received
and that will go a long way to describing the strength.

buy several test what tools and techniques are required to defeat them.

destruction tests locks and reports on what they had to do..
places odds on whether a culprit would carry those tools.

I was reading a thread about this lock in another section. Apparently someone figured out how to open it with a bic pen. I think it was the same lock anyway.

It's obviously cheap and probably not too strong, but if it intimidates a thief with bolt cutters into looking for another bike I guess it's done its job.

this one? yea I made that thread, as you can see. Like I said, the keys for this one is different. they're not cylindrical. The old U-locks could be opened with bic pen cutouts because the cylindrical shape of the pen match almost exactly with the keys. This u-lock uses keys that have teeth in them.

and just for the record, I got to keep that outdated u-lock after getting my refund, and based on the picture, the make of the u-lock from this thread and the other one appear to be the same.

In any case, I would assume that it's much better than an ordinary bike lock that you can buy from walmart, right? I mean you need a small disk saw to hack through the metal... you can't just open it with a bolt cutter can you?

Yes, you can. The thinner it is, the easier. That's pretty thin, and there's different types of heat-treating.

The two most common ways through a U lock are bolt cutters (thicker is better here, along with a quality heat-treatment) and bottle jack (design of shackle is what helps.) I'd venture a guess that the shackle is a simple and easily defeated design, and it'd be pretty easy to snip through that with bolt cutters.

It weighs 1/4th what my u-lock does, that says something at least.

well I think I'll take my chances with this one anyway. I mean the price curve is pretty wacky. You have to go up to $60 or so in order to have a lock that weighs ~4 lbs. Everything in the $10-30 range weighs no more than 2.4 lbs. I don't know about heat treatment though

it looks like a lock and the bike is marginal so people likely won't bother,

what makes you assume I got my bike from walmart?
