Bizarre Buzzing

Well, whatever I've been doing to my MTB recently, it seems to be rebelling.

When I'm cycling fairly fast there seems to be a bizarre buzzing noise coming from the middle of the bike. It seems to buzz with the tyres - it doesn't do it at a low speed (less than about 12mph) but once tyre noise starts to become noticeable it seems to speak up.

Upon further inspection (hitting the saddle with the palm of my hand to replicate bumps in the road/tyres) it seems to be coming from something at the back. I'm beginning to wonder if it's something to do with the wheel bearings - does anyone have any opinion on what it could be?

Thanks,

Is there a spoke guard on the rear wheel?
How about water bottle and rack braze-ons? Are there any bolts inserted in these that may be loose? Is there something inside the frame rattling around?

Yeahd, there is a spoke guard, which isn't loose, and the bolts holding the bottle holder on aren't loose either.

I took it to the LBS and they said that the cones either side of the wheel was squeezing the bearings too tightly so they loosened them (at a price of 5!) but the problem hasn't gone away.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Did the LBS adjust the cones or open the wheel up and look at them? Pitted cones, broken bearing balls, and cracked races will make all kinds of fun crunchy sounds.

Pretty classic symptoms of demon possession, which
is a much more common problem than most people
realize. Most common fix at LBS is an exorcism.
