Derailleur(s) help

Hi!

Sram Rival.
Everything was flawless until the end of a 62 mile ride on Saturday, when I started sensing what felt like the chain rubbing on the inner plate of FD when on big ring and any of 4 innermost rear cogs. It would occur on the left pedal downstroke, only with considerable power.

Optimistic, I hoped it was just grit on recently lubed chain. Wiped off. Rode on Monday and it was still there. Multi tool - First I messed with the wrong limit (of course) and kind of gave up on it for that ride.

The tension on a cable wouldn't increase , I believe (and am not an expert so please correct me if I'm wrong), so I figured the limit moved.(?)

At home, I tightened the high limit thus limiting travel and moving FD cage inward slightly. Consequently, got a rattle on the back. Decreased RD cable tension with barrel adjuster. Looked good but warming up for today's ride I noticed new symptoms - some FD cage rubbing while on small chain ring.. Fixed with FD barrell downtube adjuster but then the original - left downstroke inner cage rubbing when on big ring was back!

Cage seems perfectly aligned with chain..

The bike's been re-cabled, stretched out and adjusted again several hundred miles ago and all was great.

Sorry for the lack of pronouns and weird sentence construction. Not thinking straight but wanted to lay this out here.. I'd like to fix it myself, with your help, and not have to use up more quick tune favors from the LBS.

Thanks.

1. Check the crank set. Are the chain ring bolts on tight? Check for less likely failures too, like cracks in the crank arms.

2. Check the BB. Is the BB loose? Are the fixing bolts that attach crank to BB spindle on tight?

3. check the frame at right chain stay near the bottom bracket. Have someone stand on left pedal with brakes applied and see if you see a micro-fracture in the chainstay or area close to the BB.

It's not nice to scare someone like that!!!

I'll check the bolts and etc as you mention. Thanks for the suggestions.

I forgot -

0. Check the clamp on the FD and just make sure it isn't loose and the cable tension hasn't moved it.

I've broken two frames at the chainstay... warranty claims that got me replacements. But a hassle to migrate parts off and back onto those frames. But it has happened :-).

Will do. I really hope it's not a broken frame / chainstay micro-failure as you put it... I find it unlikely. Frame is Neuvation FC100. I weigh 162 and put out good power - I assume, since I sprint uphill like a maniac .

I'll keep you posted.

Did you try tightening your shifter cable? That's the most likely culprit, since cables do stretch over time.

The limits make no diference and are exactly as the name implies, "Limits" to keep the chain from either going over the big (H) or small (L) rings.

I understand, but given it was rubbing on the inside of the cage it would actually imply in the need of more cable tension if anything. So that threw me off. Wasn't a standard cable stretch case...

OK. As it turns out, it was a kink on the Gore Ride-On cable's housing right underneath the BB due to the sharp angle on my frames cable guide. Took a pro to find out and fix - undo cable, clip the housing off on that bend and grease it up.. 10 bucks labor... I needed a new bottle cage too that they were holding for me
