Rear skewer wear and lube

I have a bike trailer that came with a rear skewer + trailer hitch/mount. The skewer on my bike is XT and I'm swapping between the two when I use the trailer.

1) Should I always use the trailer skewer when towing the trailer (i.e. are these specially engineered to take the forces / wear)?
2) When I'm doing all this swapping should I be lubricating the skewers? I have some marine grease (used on my pedal threads)... is this good or should I use a different product? How much should I put on?

Thanks!

1 , Yes you should use the skewer which can with the trailer, they usually longer than normal ones .
2. your grease will be fine to use . just use a small amount on your fingers and just wipe the skewer with it .

One coating is probably fine to inhibit rust. Since there is no moving friction between skewer and axle.
