Rear Derailleur Upgrade Question
Forum,
I have a Shimano 600/Ultegra 6400 groupset from the mid-90s on my 1995 Cannondale. Looking to upgrade the rear derailleur to possibly a newer Shimano 105. The setup is 8 speed with a double crank. Are there any issues with getting a new rear derailleur with my older component setup?
Any info is helpful.
Thank you.

the index clicks are on the other end, shapes of the parts change
but they still shove the chain back and forth largely the same ..
but if the Old stuff aint Broke .. well, you know the rest

zsmithku, The 600 RD is my favorite RD. If it isn't broken or if it'll wrap enough chain, clean it up and keep using it. It will work with a 9S cassette and while I haven't used one w/a 10S cassette, it should work with a it as well.

Any Shimano 9-speed (5500 or 6500) rear derailleur will work fine with an 8-speed Shimano cassette and brifters. I used a 6500 rd on my otherwise 105 8-speed bike for a couple of years until a stray piece of wire ruined it. BTW, these 9-speed rd's also work great on 10-speed drivetrains and I have a 6500 rd on a current 10-speed bike.
As fietsbob rather cryptically stated it, the indexing is defined by the shifters and the derailleur just follows orders.
