Can't get bar end shifters to stay put
 

Hi everyone
so i just finished my first build-up ever, with these shimano bar end shifters that I've never used before. When i first installed them they seemed to be tight enough but then realized they were a bit loose. now both of them (esp the right side) will not get tighter when i use a flat head to try to screw them in more. they seem to get looser the more i tighten them, but never get tight enough where they stay inside the handlebars without turning.
any help would be appreciated

Don't know anything about Shimano bar end shifters, but Campys (& maybe others) tighten when you turn the bolt counter clockwise...

That's what I was thinking too. I tried that thinking it was the case, but they don't seem to tighten that way either

They're designed to be tightened with a 6 mm Allen key. If you are using a flat screwdriver that might be the problem. Shimano bar ends are tightened by turning counter clockwise.

Hello Jensonly, welcome to the forums. are these friction or index shifters? is the mount loose in the bars? or the shifter loose in the mount?

I agree with the above, the mounting bolt should be 6mm and turns counterclockwise sometimes.

i dont have the bike in front of my to check, however i'm trying to visualize where I'd stick the allen key? on the lateral side there are just caps basically and then then on the inside is just like a slot where a flat head can fit into. Maybe I have to take that part off to get to it, you think i'd remember when i first installed them.

Currently having the most trouble with the one that's indexed, but also for the friction one as well as it's for the front

jensonly, You have to remove the lever with the flat head screwdriver, on the inside will be another screw that is turned CCW to tighten the entire mount to the handlebar.

You need to remove the levers to get to the mounting bolt and use a 6 MM hex to get to it and as everyone said turn counter clockwise to tighten it .

Like the others said, for Shimano bar end shifters, remove the lever and then use a hex wrench to tighten.

Go to the shimano website and get the tech document for the bar end shifters. It will save you some headaches not only for this particular function, but also direct you which position to set the levers (and derailleur ) before you take the levers off. It matters! (I can't remember off hand, but it took me a while and some assistance from this forum a couple of years ago when i didn't do this and then my shifting was messed up when I reassembled).

Definitely better to look at the diagram in my case since I can only imagine trying to put it back then realizing everything is all screwed up
