Need help with adjusting seat

I have an old bike from the 1970's. Bought it off of someone on craigslist. I want to adjust the seat but it seems like the seat post and the frame have fused together. does anybody have anny suggestions on how to get it to budge? any help will be appreciated

what i did was attach a vise grip to the seat post and had a towel in between the vise grip and seat post( so not to scratch the post) and turn it with a crap load of force. and removed it. the seat post was still shiny and new looking. this bike was a raleigh record. what i wanna know is why did i require so much force to remove it? did the bike frame shrink or the seat post expand?

if a post is in frame for 6 months or more without being grease it can become frozen in it place as you had found out . now since you have it out grease it and the frame so you don't have this problem again . re-grease at lease one a year.
