    Fixing a beat up cruiser

I'm helping a friend, trying to get his son's Schwinn Jaguar back to riding status. He fell off the bike trying to avoid a car when he locked up the front brake (glad to know the brake works) was unable to anticipate the force. In the process, the bike landed on the right, tweaking the derailer hanger and the messing up the el-cheapo brake levers. I ended up hack sawing the hanger off, using a 30 year old adaptor claw and got the shifting to work again. I have an old set of Avid 2.0 levers that I believe works for centerpull cantilevers (it was originally connected to Shimano XT V-brakes with travel agents). I would like to use these levers but the cheap V-brakes on the bikes are a little suspect as well. The rear post seems off angle. I'm thinking of using uber long reach calipers like what some BMX and cheap mountain bikes use so I can bypass the posts but I'm not sure if they are compatible with the Avid 2.0's.

Old-style caliper brakes should be compatible with your levers. It's worth looking around when trying to find suitable brakes. Newer ones tend to be stamped steel and are notoriously bendy. Older styles are forged (or something similar) and should be better in terms of performance, though still probably not as good as v-brakes or cantilevers. If only the rear posts are suspect, I would use a caliper brake at the rear and a cantilever or v-brake on the front. The original brakes will probably be improved by fitting better brake pads.
I've got a bike, you can ride if you like it's got a basket, a bell that rings and things to make it look good- Pink Floyd, 1967
