The wheel/rim is nicely centered between the stays. The frame is just a couple of years old and has never been crashed, so I think its unlikely that the hanger is bent.

I have to admit that it also seems unlikely to me that the center cog in a Shimano freewheel wouldn't run quietly with a non-Shimano chain, so whatever the cause turns out to be, it will probably be something odd/weird/unusual/unsuspected.

You didn't answer the most important part of my previous post - is the rim of the wheel centered between the lock nuts of its own hub?

Just about any wheel can be centered between the stays - a properly dished wheel is what you want centered between the stays.

I've built a bunch of bikes with KMC 7 speed chains and new 6 or 7 speed shimano freewheels and they always feel like complete garbage, but seem to calm down some after they wear together, but the first few miles feel absolutely terrible. Anyone else have this experience? Do they calm down for you or stay terrible?

I just put a new shimano hg37 freewheel and a SRAM PC-870 chain on my Miyata, and am experiencing the same roughness. Hope the roughness disappears with more riding. The old chain and freewheel were smoother together. When will I learn to leave well enough alone?
