Looking to replace Shimano 9 sp. shifters/brake levers. Any suggested source(s)?
I have a circa 2006 Trek 1200 9-speed road bike that came with Shimano Tiagra STI shifters/brake levers. I'd like to replace them (they function but they're pretty banged up). Having looked online, it seems there are no 9 speed Shimano 105 or Ultegra shifters available anymore. The Tiagra shifters that are available have what they call "integrated optical gear display", i.e., little clear plastic windows on each shifter to tell you what gear you're in. I can't bear to put those on my bike. So what are my options? Is there a source for new-old-stock 9-speed 105 shifters? At this point I'd probably even settle for an earlier model of the Tiagra's, i.e., without the little gear display. I don't want to buy used, and I don't have the budget to change the whole group over to 10 speed (nor would this bike merit that kind of investment). Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Go 105 10 speed. You just need shifters, cassette & chain. $250 total at Ribble

I've used the "alternate cable routing" on the rear derailleur to shift a 9-speed drivetrain with 10-speed shifters. Works great. It just stops before the last click- make sure the limit screws are set right, otherwise that last click could send the chain into the spokes. Then the whole system is ready for 10 speed when the chain and cassette get worn.

Thanks for the link, 10 Wheels. I'd really like to avoid ebay as I've had some bad experiences with ebay sellers in the past. More importantly, if one eliminates the mountain bike shifters and the used road bike shifters shown at that link, just two pair remain: a set of 105's for $239 (buy it now) plus shipping, and a pair of Dura Ace for $499 (buy it now). We can eliminate the unaffordable Dura-Ace, which would be roughly 1/2 the price of what I paid for the whole bike when it was new. LOL.
Is $239 + $6.71 S&H for the 105's a good price? Since these are discontinued and aren't offered by ordinary online retailers it's hard for me to know what the price ought to be. I'm still wary of buying on ebay, but if this is my only option......

cycle maven, thanks for the mention of alternate cable routing. I found an illustration of it on the Sheldon Brown site but I've also seen comments on other other forums that it isn't so easy to get things working flawlessly. This is definitely an option I'll keep in mind, but I must admit that as a bike mechanic newb I'm not too adventurous and am going to try to find an affordable pair of 9 sp. shifters first. I do appreciate the response though and it's good to know that you've had success with the alternate cable routing approach.

Consider one of the UK or European cycle supply houses. Several of them sell nine speed stuff, or did last time I looked. It won't be cheap, you can probably get comparable model 10 speed stuff for less.
well, I just looked at Chain Reaction, while they still sell new 8 and 9 speed STI, its all lower end. Everything else is ten speed.

I was doing it on the cheap- I found some 10-speed Microshift shifters for $129 and I had a 9-speed cassette and chain in my junk box. I figured that if the alternate cable routing didn't work out, I could just buy a new chain and cassette in the 10 speed flavor. But it has been shifting flawlessly, with no additional adjustment after the first ride. Maybe 1000 miles so far.
