27x1/8" tire on a 27x1/4" rim?

I have an old bike with rims that are labelled 27x1/4" (these are still the stock wheels that came on the bike in 1984). I know at one point one of the tires I had on it was a 27x1/8" labelled tire, but I don't think I rode it much inbetween the time it was put on and when I replaced it. Was this a problem/unsafe? Just wondering if next time around I can get around with putting slightly skinnier tires on these rims.

Should be interchangeable. This assumes these are hook bead rims, which is very likely by 1984, if that is the year of manufacture.

My younger son is running 27 x 1 on 27 x 1 1/4 rims with no problems. They are hooked rims.
