shifter confusion

I am using an ultegra 600 downtube shifter set up and want to upgrade to STI's. Need help! I am using an eight speed hub now with a spacer, my bike is a seven speed. Can I use a 9-speed shifter or should I use a eight speed? What will I need from start to finish as far as hardware? My bike is all ultegra now. I'm on a budget so I'm looking at E-bay to pick up the gear. What is flight deck compatible mean? Any help would be mucho appreciated.

You'll be ahead of the game to get shimano 9 speed shifters, cassette and chain. You can also do 8 with just shifters(non Dura Ace). Flight deck shifters are wired for the shimano computer.
