Need help servicing Shimano gears on Shogun Mountain Bikw
Dear members, sorry I haven't filled in anything to introduce myself but I wanted to get straight to the point. So this is my introduction. Hi I'm a 27/m from Australia. I have a 2 year old Shogun Trail Breaker 1 which appears to be fitted with a Falcon front derailleur and Shimano 7SIS rear derailleur if this info helps. I also have Shimano brakes. I have brand new brake and gear cables and need help in deciding on whether I need to replace the cables, replacing them if needs be, and ensuring that everything's in working order before finishing the job.
I look forward to learning how to maintain my bike and receiving guidance from those of you with the necessary expertise. Thank you so kindly, and cheers
Harpoon.

Um... you should replace the cables if the old ones are rusted or don't shift and brake well. You might try cleaning and greasing the cables first. Does that answer your question?

The brakes aren't a major concern I think they're ok, but I don't know how to adjust them properly that's all. There are things u turn where the cable comes out on the brake handles but they don't seem to do anything when I turn them. I know I need to change the cable in the front derailleur, but I just don't know how loose or tight the two little screws for high and low are supposed to be coz I stuffed around with them. Also, currently the front gears don't go down to the lowest of the 3 cogs properly, or highest can't remember. Incidentally, do u count the number of gears on the bike just by the back cogs (7) or do you multiply by the front cogs (3) which would equal 21 gears? So yea, not sure about the back cable though. It might be okay, but I stuffed around with the screws on that too so I need to know how to adjust it to where it should be.

Take your bike to an LBS and get them to do the job. If you are clueless (as evidenced by you stuffing around with the little screws on the derailleurs) you are heading for disaster, especially with the brakes.

Start with this link.Park Tool Repair Help Go the the derailer section. Start with step one and proceed, step by step, through the procedure to the end. No shortcuts allowed. You will correct the problems you created. Next go to the brake section and repeat the process. None of this is rocket science. It does require that you work in an organized manner and follow the steps outline in the order in which they are written. Most of the problems found on this board are caused by people who cannot or will not follow instructions.
