Sturmey 4 speed shifter?

I know by experience that the new SA 3 speed hubs work fine with old shifters, the question I need to ask is, .... how about a new wide range 5 speed hub + old 4 speed shifter? ( I'm interested in a LOW gear on my old roadster, I've got a 22 cog on the back already) Tim
