Good Catalogs / Building a bike
If a person is thinking about building a bike, what are good catalogs for browsing? Does anyone have a good catalog listing compatability of various drivetrain parts? I'm looking for paper catalogs with pictures, rather than online-only. There's something more satisfying about flipping pages. And they're more portable. Anyway, I'm not yet looking for lowest prices, etc, I'm looking for the best information.

hah! you need a J&B or QBP catalog (bike distributors), which require you to have an account, which they will not give to you, unless you start a bike shop. if you have any friends who work in bike shops, see if you can get them to give you last month's catalog. the prices in the catalog will be about half to one-third of what you will pay retail. but, you won't be able to order directly--you'll have to go through a bike shop. also, these catalogs DO NOT have compatibility information. they are perused by bike geeks who know this stuff by heart. best advice for compatibility questions will come one post at a time on bikeforums.

Hmm. I see. I suspect I can get my hands on a Quality catalog without too much trouble. I've been on the Performance mailing list in the past, but they seem to cater to people that want to look fashionable rather than people who build their own.
