I'm not sure either. They seem to be pretty much interchangable. Someone reported concerns with certain cranksets, including Sugino, seating properly on the UN72. I am using a Sugino crank on a UN72 with no apparent problem, but I may not be experienced enough as a mechanic or cyclist to know whether it is correct or not.

UN72 uses slightly higher quality bearings than UN52, and I believe UN72 uses a hollow axle.

I've not come across it. I'm running a UN52 and it seems perfectly adequate.
