Custom Smartphone Bike Attachment
Lately I have felt creative and have been thinking of ways to mount my phone to my handlebars. There are universally designed cases but they are bulkly and well, already made.
I use an Otterbox Defender for my device and it comes with a belt clipping holster.
My idea is to remove the swivel on the back side, drill two holes to match a bracket, use a handlebar mounted water bottle cage attachment and clip the phone into the holster.
Any chance someone has done this? Any suggestions, recommendations?

Bike handlebars take a lot of harsh bumps. Is you phone designed to accept that level of punishment? The designers of bike cyclometers and lights and other puropse-built bike accessories intended for handlebar mounting know what their items will have to withstand but I don't think phone designers think that way. I carry my cell phone in a padded sleeve in my under saddle pack where it's pretty well shock protected. That has the added advantage that I can't hear it ring while I'm riding.

I'd be interested in a good, robust solution for this. I'd like to use my phone as a cyclocomputer... It can do everything I need it to. Then I can use a regular one for cadence...

I had a pretty tired clip on case for my iPhone 4 which I affixed to the very same water bottle bracket using Gorilla Glue. Because the case was rigid but wrapped in fabric, there was an unacceptable amount of flopping for my $500+ phone. It was probably secure, but the shaking is obviously not something you want to see, so I use a great $8 armband now and have stopped worrying about it.
However, I think the Otterbox's multiple layer structure would be much better suited to this. Lastly, while I am a HUGE proponent of the creativity and thriftiness of do-it-yourself, there are safe and sturdy iPhone 4 specific mounts for less than the combined cost of your two parts there. With all due respect.
If you do go for it, I'd be interested in some pictures of course.
