Eight speed chain with 9 speed RD?

Is a eight speed chain/cassette compatible with a 9 speed XTR RD with stock jockey wheels?

Yes. I used a 9-speed Ultegra rear derailleur on an 8-speed bike for quite a while and there were no problems.
