Can I reuse my IG chain?

I used my chaintool to break my Shimano IG chain so I could remove it and give a good cleaning. I have always used the tool to push a pin enough to get the chain apart, then push it back in. Is it safe to do this with an Shimano IG chain, or should I just get a new chain, and use a SRAM Power Link?

BTW, I've already done it but have not put more than 5 miles on the chain due to fear of something bad happening..... Your thoughts?

vI vote for the SRAM Power Link. That's what I always use on my chains. According to Shimano pushing the pin back in is unsafe. My experience with the Power link has led to no problems after three years use on my IG and HG chains.

IG chains depend on a slight flaring or peening of the heads of the pins to keep the plates from spreading and falling off the ends of the pins. You broke this off when pushing the pin out so that joint will be an Achilles Heel, and will let go eventually, usually at the worst possible time.

Either buy a Shimano joining pin made for the job (buy extras for the future) or use a Sram connector. BTW- I hope you marked the problem pin, because otherwise it may be hard to find.

Ive done the same thing.

Put the chain back it took a bit to get the pin back and not sticking. I have put over 60 miles on it. Including some hills.

I prefer the master link because it makes the job easier. Until I started using Taya chains years ago I pushed the pin back in and didn't have problems. That was with 7 and 8 speeds. A machinist in the refinery I used to work in did it with 9 speed chains.

Before I knew about the newer Hyperglide/IG chains having the special pins and whatnot I reinstalled one by pushing the pin back in. It never failed me, but it's certainly possible. Now I use replaceable master links on everything but the old chains that can safely be installed with the original pins.

I'd be willing to say it will be virtually impossible to find.
