Pledge or car wax?
 

I usually clean up my bikes and add a little car wax for protection.

However, I volunteer at the local bike co-op and the closest they have to car wax is Pledge. I have to say, it makes the bike frame shine even better than car wax.

But which provides more protection for the frame?

I use Pledge because of the advice of my painter. It makes it easier to clean off the mud and dirt that builds up over a few weeks.

As long as they last they'll offer equal protection. However car wax makers are more careful about UV and chemical stability than Pledge needs to be. Whether it makes a difference, only time will tell. A good auto wax lasts for months parked outdoors 24/7. If pledge also lasts that long stay with it.

I use Pledge or motorcycle cleaner/polish on all my bikes and motorcycles; and never actually wash them. Spray them down, wipe off, good to go. Yes, a hand-applied carnauba auto wax probably lasts longer, but then I don't go three months without cleaning them. If you're going to spray them down every week or two, it's not nearly as important to use the theoretically "best" product.

I try to grab the motorcycle cleaner/polish if the current object of devotion is really filthy, because it seems to clean better than the Pledge. They both shine just fine.

You don't say what country you are from. In North America, pledge is available in the household cleaner section of a supermarket, or large grocery store. It's intended purpose is to clean dust off and polish furniture.

Turtle Wax Bug and Tar Remover cleans removed the dirt and leaves a nice coating of silicon wax behind.

Minor points on the Pledge.
There are two types a waxed version which leaves a coating(carnuba I belive) & a non waxed which I don't believe does leave a coating.
I suspect the wax is part of what makes it work for dirt etc.
The Carnuba will yellow a bit with age. Not a big deal unless you get a build up.
Also the motorcycle crowd mentions that the lemon scented version attracts bees.
I have used that, but haven't seen any bees other than those splatted on my windscreen so can't testify to the veracity of that.
Another option (scent free with wax) would be commerical stainless polish available at any restaurant supply store & costco..one can would go a long way on a bike, use sparingly.

I keep a can of Pledge in the garage for my bike. Ahh... lemony goodness!

Gunnar recommends car wax with UV protection for its frames. I think they even list some specific brands, though I forget what they are at the moment. A can of wax should last pretty much forever though, so I don't make a big deal about spending the few extra bucks.
