front brakes problem from a noob!

Hey guys. Today, I took my front tire off of my bike to put it in the back seat of my car (no bike rack yet). When I put it back on, I had to force the tire through the brakes a little. When I had it screwed down and back on its tires, i was rolling it and the brakes on one side was scrubbing the rim. Nothing I could do would make it come out wider. Actually, I really had no clue WHAT to do. Did my ride anyway. What could I have done different? Should I have loosened the brakes before I took the tire off and put it back on? If so, how would I have done that?

Please dont flame me..Im a complete noob to riding but want to learn as much as I can!
