Chainring Compatibility

So, I have a Shimano Compact 5750 105 crankset (50/34t) with a CN-5701 chain. From what I understand, I just can't put any old 9/10 speed chainring on there due to some strange combination of the new chainring spacing and the new asymmetrical chain in the current generation of Shimano groupsets. Anyway, I want to switch to a 50/36t. It's just gonna give a slightly nicer chainline in the small with a slightly less jarring change in cadence when I shift the front.

FSA's new "N10" chainrings are suppose to work with the 7900 and 6700 cranks. Can I put the 36t (which is designed to be used with the 46t for cyclocross) on and have it work fine? I suppose I could slap down 30 bucks and fine out, but I would like to see if anyone has actually done it.

On a two ring crankset the smaller ring is a dumb ring. Meaning it doesn't have shift ramps and pick up pins like the middle (3ring application) large ring do to aid in shifting. As long as you get a ring with the same BCD then you should be fine.

OT - you joined in 12/10 and you're finally posting? Lurk much?
