Can I use compressionless cable housing (for indexed shifters) for brake cables as well?
OK, I'm an idiot. A quick trip to the land of Sheldon Brown answered this question for me. The answer, for anyone who is interested, is an emphatic "no."
Sorry for the interruption...

From the Sheldon Brown web site:
"Warning: Since compressionless housing relies on plastic to hold it together, it is not as strong as conventional spiral housing, and should never be used for brakes! The loads applied to brake cables can easily cause compressionless housing to rupture and burst, causing a complete and sudden loss of brake function."

You can use a BRAKE HOUSING (steel wound) for SHIFT CABLES... But using a SHIFTER HOUSING (comopressionless) on BRAKES can be very dangerous - it works, but try at your own risk (emergency purposes only!)

Actually there is a compression-less brake cable available. The cable is made for MTB mechanical disc brakes, and is kevlar wrapped.
