Will Ferrules be necessary?
Last thing to be done to setup my ss/fixie is to cable up the front brake. I have bullhorn handlebars, and one time trial lever on the end, and one cross lever. So I need to cut two pieces of housing: one from the TT to the cross, and one from the cross to the front brake. I am, at the moment, out of ferrules. With a clean cut and ground end on the housing, what are the ferrules doing for me? Do I need them?

If you re-doing it right .. get the ferrules [LBS, nearby?]
there are stepped housing ends, if the lever hole shoulder bore is small .

I've set up cables without the ferrules. I think I once wrapped some duck tape around the end so it would fit correctly. It might work if you are really stuck, but you'll end up doing it again. Unless you are marooned on a desert island, get the ferrules.

tastewar: To my mind brakes are too important a system to do things half-way. Do it right the first time.
"With a clean cut and ground end on the housing, what are the ferrules doing for me?" They might prevent your brakes from jamming "on" and failing to release when you make a hard stop. Might save a trip over the handlebars.

If the set-up has room for ferrules, use them. Some levers require them and some don't. If they do, do.

Ditto the recommendation. In fact, one each business trip I've made to Japan, if I hit a store for bikes with small parts, I stock up on ferrules of many types. Get a few spares!

Thanks for all the responses. I had to stop at 2 LBS's, but was able to get what I needed. I do normally try to keep a bunch around, but went through them all on another build. Obviously have to re-stock, now.
May also have to re-do the second length of housing anyway. Think I cut it a bit too short. Argh. Wouldn't be so bad, except I will also have to get another brake cable.

Get a bulk bottle of brake cable ferrules. Giving up on a bike build at 9:30 in the evening because you're missing some small-but-necessary part has nothing to recommend it. Lord knows I've done it enough.
When I first saw the thread title, I thought it said "Is Will Ferrell really necessary?"

I was trying to go by the guideline that housings should be just long enough and no longer. I succeeded on the "no longer" part but failed on the "long enough". Good enough to ride around the block, at least.
