Ocr 3 something skipping
Hello I guys, I'll try to be as clear as I can. When my son is riding his Giant OCR3 we hear sometimes, absolutly not all the time maybe once per ride and without any input to the derailleur control or brakes a loud bang, crack.....hard to describe here ;-) when he stepped hard on the pedal .A sound similar I would think to a chain skipping a theeth, or the sound of something skipping, coming from the rear, anyway its some sort of a loud bang , He said the the bike isnT shifting into another gear when that happen.
I know its not easy to troubleshoot from where you are but do you have an idea ? Are the OCR3 have a known problem of that sort documented somewhere ? Thanks guys

I know exactly what's happening: the ratchet pawls in the freewheel mechanism are failing.
What's the rear hub, Shimano? If so, you can get a new cassette body (the bit with the freewheel ratchet the cogs slide onto) put on.
Or you could try to overhaul it, but you'll need a cone spanner, chain whip, HG lockring tool, a bit of appropriately-sized plate to undo the DS axle bearing cup that holds the cassette body together, and prolly a 10mm allen key to get it off.

Anyway its pretty disapointing to see a major components failing within less that 3000 miles on it, well....I'm not sure if the cassette is shimano I'll have to take a look later on today.
Do you know where I can get some information on how to service / repair this components ?
Finnaly thanks for your input its really appreciated

OCR3 does not have any known problem. Realize that all of the bike manufacturers use the same components, from the same manufacturers. The only thing Giant built was the frame. And the frame is not the problem.
As far as components wearing out, again, those same components are on Treks, Specialized, Cannondales, etc. So the wear would be no better or worse with any other brand.
Kimmo above is talking about the freehub assembly, not the cassette. I've never had a freehub fail, so I would defer to his knowledge. Most of the time in my experience, a bike skipping will have a worn cassette (often just one or two gears). But it doesn't make a loud bang. Its more of a crunching sound, as the chain slips. Typically, the skip will occur when mashing (putting a lot of force into pedaling). I test ride every old bike I rehab up a hill, leaving it in a high gear, and mashing up the hill.
