New Wheel
I bought a new front wheel and it doesn't fit onto my fork. Should I go return it and get another wheel or is there a better solution? There's a nut that stops my rim from fitting onto my fork. Can I take that nut off?

I think the fork is too narrow to fit it. Can I take off the spacer/cone to make it fit?

What in the world are u talking about? When U say new rim you mean a NEW WHEEL??? rim and wheels are two different things. Or a car is the same than a motorcycle?

Yes sorry, new wheel. I'm still getting used to bike vocab. No pics as I don't have a camera. My bike is an older department store bike.

My bike is an older department store bike. <--- ok there are many dept stores around the country even u can get one in Geronimo's casino (dont take me wrong, just making a point), brand? year?? we have no idea what do you have and if many of us could read minds be sure that we would be trying to make money in another ways more effectives, specially with those extra powers that we dont have.

Please tell us what's on the side of the tire that's on your
bike right now, ex. 26 X 1.75, 700 X 30,etc.

New wheel is a Weinmann RM19 27x1-1/4.
No make/model on the bike.
Old rim is a Schurman Super (spelling?)

When I haven't got a clue, I've found the best approach is to take the problem to a local expert who can fix it.
In this case, the bike shop you purchased the wheel from... Or, since it is a very old size - 27x1 1/4 - If it was a private sale, take it to any local bike store.

Measure the spacing of your fork. Most would have 100 mm (4") between the inside faces of the dropouts where the axle sit, but there are a few oddballs who have less. I recommend you start there.
Removing parts from the hub's axle assembly isn't something you can do on a whim. While there may be a washer or two there that can be removed, you can't remove the locknut and expect a happy ending. W/o the locknut the cone will start to wander, either seizing the wheel, or causing it to lose any semblance of bearing adjustment - depending on which side locknut you've removed.
In theory it'd be possible to have the wheel nuts (assuming it's not a q/r wheel) to do the job of the locknut, but it'd make installing the wheel a royal PITA.
